Because May is skin cancer awareness month, it’s time to learn more about this disease. Skin cancer occurs when skills cells grow abnormally, which is usually caused by sun exposure. Skin cancer can develop on any part of the body but is more likely to appear on the scalp, neck, chest, face, arms and legs.

There are certain factors that can increase your chances of developing skin cancer including excessive sun exposure, family history of skin cancer, fair skin, history of sunburns and moles. It is important to get checkups regularly to find out if you have skin cancer.

Skin cancer is diagnosed through a skin biopsy or skin examination by your doctor. With a skin biopsy, a sample of an odd looking mole is tested to see if cancer cells exist. The three types of skin cancer include melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. Melanoma is considered the most dangerous type of skin cancer.

If skin cancer is found, you will have to get treatment right away to get rid of it. There are several different treatment options available including freezing, excisional surgery, laser therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy and biological therapy. The best treatment option for you depends on the size, type and location of the skin lesion.

The best way to prevent skin cancer is to protect your skin from the sun. It is best to completely stay out of the sun in the early afternoon when ultraviolet rays are the harshest. When you do go out in the sun, make sure to wear sunscreen. Don’t forget to reapply your sunscreen every couple of hours if you plan on being outside for awhile. You can also wear protective clothing to protect your skin like dark clothes, broad-brimmed hats and sunglasses. Also, stay away from tanning beds. Even though you are in them for a short period of time, they are just as dangerous for your skin.

A biopsy is the removal of a small amount of tissue or fluid from specific areas of concern on the body. These samples are used for diagnostic purposes, such as determining the presence of breast or skin cancer. The samples are then sent to a laboratory for examination by a pathologist. There are several biopsy methods that are used at the Procedure Clinic. These methods are excisional, fine needle, incisional, punch, and shaving.

Excisional
An excisional biopsy is a procedure that removes all or a majority of any abnormal area, such as a mass or lump. The procedure is performed using local anesthesia and following the removal, the area is sutured closed. Side-effects may include bleeding, infection or bruising.

Fine Needle Biopsy
Fine needle biopsies are a common way to remove fluid or tissue from areas of concern. The sample is collected by way of an extremely thin needle that is attached to a syringe. The needle is inserted into the lump and fluid is pulled into the syringe. This type of biopsy may not accurately assess the presence of cancer and further testing is often necessary. Side-effects may include bruising around the insertion area.

Incisional Biopsy
An incisional biopsy is one in which the surgeon cuts into a mass or lesion and removes only a small portion for analysis. The procedure is performed with local anesthesia and the site must be closed with sutures. In terms of complications, there is a some bleeding, pain, infection or bruising, however these risks are minimal.

Punch Biopsy
When there are abnormal lesions or growths on the skin, a punch biopsy is often used to determine the presence of cancer. An instrument is used to remove a cylinder-shaped core of skin and tissue directly from the area of concern. Sutures are used to close up the resulting wound. Potential complications include bleeding, bruising or infection.

Shaving Biopsy
Shaving biopsies are also a type of skin biopsy. This biopsy method removes the growth from the body, either entirely or in part, but does not remove any tissue from beneath the skin. To perform the procedure, local anesthesia is used and the skin is scraped with a blade or a razor. Potential side-effects are redness and scabbing.

More people are diagnosed with skin cancer every year than any other cancer. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, more than 2 million people are diagnosed with 3.5 million skin cancers each year. Skin cancer develops in the epidermis due to overexposure to ultraviolet radiation. Sunlight and tanning beds are sources of ultraviolet radiation that are known to cause skin cancer.

The face, scalp, chest, and arms, along with other areas of skin frequently exposed to the sun, are affected most often. However, skin cancer can also affect areas often hidden from exposure such as palms and between toes.

Risk factors besides overexposure to sunlight and tanning beds include having fair skin, a family history of skin cancer and a history of sunburns. Abnormal or multiple moles may indicate an increased risk for skin cancer.

There are three types of skin cancer including, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Basal cell and squamous cell are most often diagnosed and easily treatable if detected in early stages of the disease. Melanoma accounts for nearly 75 percent of all skin cancer deaths.

Basal cell carcinoma is typically found on the face or scalp and other areas often exposed to excessive sunlight. Signs include nodules or bumps that appear waxy or pearly, or a scar-like lesion, usually brown.

Squamous cell carcinoma also develops in areas with direct exposure to sunlight. A hard red bump or flat lesion with a crusty growth may indicate squamous cell.

Melanoma occurs in areas of the body exposed to sunlight in addition to areas usually protected from exposure. Men are more prone to developing melanoma on the head and trunk, while women are most often affected on the lower legs. People with darker complexions may develop cancer underneath nails or even on the soles of feet.

Treatment may include freezing small lesions and precancerous growths with liquid nitrogen. Larger areas of skin cancer are typically surgically removed. Surgical treatments may include Mohs surgery and excisional surgery. Laser therapy, radiation therapy and biological therapy may also be employed to remove cancerous tissue.

What is a Vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a surgical procedure that closes off the vas deferens in the scrotum, effectively sealing off the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles out. Known casually as ‘tube tying,’ a vasectomy is intended to render a man sterile.

What’s a Non-Scalpel Vasectomy?

A non-scalpel, or non-needle non-scalpel vasectomy, is a type of vasectomy procedure where there is virtually no intensive surgery involved. Anesthesia is administered by a jet spray, without any needle puncture. A single needle is inserted into the scrotum, but the vas deferens are pulled through that hole and all surgical interaction takes place outside of the scrotum. No scalpel is necessary. The process is reversible, but with no guarantee. While the vasectomy itself is typically nearly 100% effective, the reversal process is only 60%.

Benefits of a Non-Scalpel Vasectomy

Non-scalpel vasectomies are simple procedures. Because it requires no scalpel and only a small puncture, the wound will heal quickly and naturally. No incision is made, and there is no unsightly scarring. There is a much lower chance of infection. Additionally, the procedure heals easily, meaning a patient can get back to work within a few days and can resume sexual activity after two weeks. The entire process will usually take under an hour, including paperwork. The vasectomy will not affect a patient’s sexual enjoyment negatively. There is virtually no risk of complications or cancer as a result of the procedure.

Potential Risks

While complications are rare, some may occur. Possible complications include bleeding that appears like bruising, infection, chronic ache or temporary acute pain, psychological sexual difficulties, or sperm granulomas. All of these can be treated in some form or another should they occur.

Psychological issues can be addressed before and after the procedure. Men have an understandable fear of genital surgery. Doctors are capable of answering any question the patient may have. The procedure is nearly 100% effective with virtually no risk of complications, and within a month the man will be back to peak performance in every way. After three months testing is required to ensure sterility.

Sometime between the ages of 35 and 50, your doctor may recommend that you have a colonoscopy. Having this type of procedure performed at this age is an important part of preventing, diagnosing and treating colon cancer, which tends to strike in an older age group. Colon cancer is a life threatening illness. A colonoscopy will allow the doctor to see directly into the colon and parts of the intestine, so that polyps and tumors can be diagnosed and treated early.

A narrow tube with a lighted camera on the end is inserted into the colon. This is usually done under conscious sedation, so that the patient is comfortable and can be monitored by the doctor. Dietary restrictions need to be followed prior to the procedure so that the colon is clean and easy to see. The doctor may prescribe a laxative and will ask you to drink only clear liquids.

Polyps that are detected need to be removed, because it is very difficult for doctors to differentiate between cancerous and benign tumors. Bowel inflammatory disease and gastrointestinal hemorrhages can be detected with a colonoscopy as well. Prior to this however, doctors will biopsy anything they find suspicious. Certain symptoms will lead a doctor to recommend the test outside of normal preventative testing. A family history of colon cancer may trigger your doctor to prescribe the test. Abdominal pain and the appearance of blood in the stool can be the signs of a serious problem as well; a colonoscopy can quickly let the doctor know if further screening and treatment is needed.

There are complications from a colonoscopy including excessive bleeding or the potential for infection, so following doctor’s orders after the procedure is always recommended. By having the colonoscopy and detecting any problems early, serious or even fatal illnesses can be treated early or prevented all together.

Veins are the blood vessels responsible for carrying blood to the heart. Generally, they carry deoxygenated blood away from the tissues. There are valves inside of veins that help blood move towards the heart. In varicose veins, the valves do not work correctly, and some of the blood does not leave the veins. The blood builds up inside of the veins and causes the veins to become enlarged.

Some of the conditions that cause varicose veins are pregnancy, congenitally defective valves, and blood clots. Standing for long periods of time can cause an increased risk of developing varicose veins or worsen the condition. Women are more likely to suffer from varicose veins than men.

Treatments for Varicose Veins

Patients who are diagnosed with varicose veins are generally advised to wear support hose, refrain from standing for long periods of time, and to raise their legs when resting. Three of the most commonly used procedures to treat varicose veins are sclerotherapy, endovenous laser ablation, and vein stripping.

Sclerotherapy involves injecting the veins with a special solution that causes the veins to shrink and disappear after a few weeks. The procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. Endovenous laser ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a laser beam to cauterize varicose veins.

The nails serve as a protective sheath over the fingers and toes, and keeping them healthy begins with basic nutrition and a caring for overall health. Problems with toe and finger nails can be caused by several conditions, many of which can be prevented with proper nail care. Some problems are indicative of medical conditions, such as diabetes, malnutrition, and chronic organ diseases. These can include changes in the growth rate and discoloration. If these changes appear or persist with proper nail care, it is worthwhile to see a doctor about exploring possible underlying problems.

Preventing Common Problems
The pain of ingrown nails and unsightly appearance of nail fungus are the most common problems people experience. Both can be dealt with through cautious hygiene and basic nail care. The best treatment for any condition is always prevention, and ingrown nails can be prevented by trimming nails regularly, wearing comfortable shoes, and protecting the feet and hands from trauma.

Nail fungus can also be prevented, though it does require more diligence. Washing the feet regularly and keeping nails trimmed is the most important step. This will allow for early detection and treatment in case of fungal infection. Fungus prefers warm and damp conditions for growth, so every effort should be made to keep feet dry. Changing socks or hosiery more than once a day, wearing breathable shoes, and avoiding tight socks and hosiery will all help keep the feet dry. Minimizing exposure to fungal pathogens in public places, by wearing shower shoes for instance, and disinfecting nail care instruments will reduce risk of infection.

Treating Ingrown or Infected Nails
There are products available to treat ingrown nails at home, but any sign of infection should be seen by a doctor. Some medical conditions, such as diabetes or circulatory disorders, make it important to see a doctor before the risk of infection. First aid should consist of soaking in warm salt water followed by application of antiseptic and bandage.

Fungal infections can be extremely persistent. Though there are at-home treatments, many doctors now use laser treatment, which is proven safe and effective.

Every year, 103,000 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, the disease is the second leading cancer-related cause of death in the country. The best way to prevent developing this life-threatening disease is to maintain proper anorectal care. Patients over the age of 50 should have regular screenings for colorectal cancer, and patients with a family history of the disease should be screened regularly after the age of 40.

Regular anorectal examinations can alert your doctor to any signs or symptoms of the disease. Typically, an examination of this type includes a visual inspection, palpation test and anoscopic assessment. The patient lies on his or her side while the doctor looks at the anal polyp, external hemorrhoids and anal fissure. A digital examination can be used to detect masses in the anorectal canal. Finally, an anoscopy can be used to diagnose a host of anorectal diseases.

Any unusual symptoms in the anorectal area should be examined by a doctor. Itching is a common symptom of anal rectal disease. The act of scratching may additionally harm the area and makes symptoms worse. The sensitive skin surrounding the anus can be very agitated by substances like fabrics, soaps and perfumes. Scratching may only cause further irritation and result in fissures surrounding the perianal area. Anal itching is often treated with antihistamine but may require the use of a topical corticosteroid. Even if the itch is relieved, an underlying problem such as hemorrhoids may still be present. The proper anorectal care is required to diagnose and treat this symptom.

Anal pain may also indicate anorectal disease. Discomfort may be caused by anal fissures, infection, hemorrhoids or advanced rectal cancer. An anorectal examination is the first step toward diagnosing the cause of this symptom.

Anorectal diseases may also cause lumps to form in the anal area or rectal bleeding. These symptoms may indicate fissures, polyps, hemorrhoids or cancer. Once again, an anorectal examination is the most useful tool for diagnosing the cause of these symptoms.

Your body’s normal cooling mechanism is sweating, but some people sweat excessively – a condition called hyperhidrosis. The excessive sweating usually occurs on the hands, soles of the feet and underarms. Symptoms of this condition include frequent sweating that is so heavy your clothes become soaked with perspiration. You sweat even when you have not been exercising. Your hands and feet are clammy or even dripping with sweat. Hyperhidrosis is normally accompanied by a feeling or warmth, similar to a hot flash; if you have cold sweats, it may be a symptoms of a heart attack or severe anxiety. Hyperhidrosis can be focal – meaning it affects your palms, the soles of your feet and your underarms – or generalized. Focal hyperhidrosis may be genetic, as it tends to run in families. Generalized hyperhidrosis may be related to menopause, low blood sugar, some diseases or a side effect from medications. Medical conditions that may occur as a result of hyperhidrosis include fungal nail infections, bacterial skin infections, warts, eczema and skin rashes.

Treatments for hyperhidrosis include prescription antiperspirants, anticholinergic drugs, iontophoresis, laser therapy, surgery and Botox. For light to moderate hyperhidrosis, prescription antiperspirants with aluminum chloride are the first choice. The antiperspirant is applied to completely dry skin each night and washed off in the morning. Anticholinergic drugs block acetylcholine, a chemical in your body that stimulates the sweat gland. Anticholinergics may have side effects such as dry mouth or constipation. Intophoresis is a procedure that delivers a low level of electrical current to the hands, feet or armpits while the body is immersed in water. It is performed for about 15 to 30 minutes daily for two weeks and then less frequently for maintenance, which can be done at home. Botox can block the nerves that make the sweat glands work. It can be painful and the results last about four months. Side effects such as weakness of the hand muscles may occur. Laser therapy is used to destroy sweat glands in the armpit area and may be as much as 90% effective.
